The Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah are a place of ethereal beauty, a vast expanse of white crystalline salt that stretches as far as the eye can see. For Mandy and Aaron, this iconic location became the backdrop for their unforgettable bride and groom session, perfectly captured by James of James Erick Photography. Though the shoot didn’t begin quite as planned, it turned out to be a breathtaking experience, filled with love, laughter, and stunning moments against the natural splendor of the Salt Flats.
A Rocky Start with a Serendipitous Turn
When I arrived at the Bonneville Salt Flats rest stop where we planned to start, I was met with an unexpected challenge. The entrance to drive onto the Salt Flats was completely walled off, a new restriction that limited access to some of the best photo locations. Typically, I like to explore areas farther out, where the salt’s unique patterns are pristine, but with no vehicle access, this was no longer an option.
However, every cloud has its silver lining—or in this case, a shimmering salt crystal lining. With no vehicles allowed, the surface was untouched by tire tracks or debris, leaving behind an immaculate canvas of geometric salt patterns. It was like the earth had prepared itself for Mandy and Aaron’s session, offering up its unspoiled beauty as a gift.
The Couple’s Timeless Style
Mandy and Aaron brought their own unique sense of style to the shoot, blending rustic charm with classic elegance. Mandy was stunning in her long-sleeved, white lace wedding dress, which trailed gracefully behind her as she walked. Her veil, delicate and intricate, often caught on the salt’s uneven surface, but Aaron was always ready to lend a hand, carrying it for her like the true gentleman he is. Adding a Western twist, Mandy paired her dress with cowboy boots, a perfect nod to the couple's adventurous spirit.
Aaron looked equally striking, wearing cowboy boots, a white long-sleeved shirt, and a brown vest that gave him a rugged yet refined look. Together, they were a vision of love and partnership, embodying both elegance and down-to-earth charm.
Golden Hour Magic
We began the session with the sun about an hour away from setting, bathing the Salt Flats in a warm, golden glow. The deep blue sky above created a striking contrast with the white salt below, giving the photos a dramatic yet inviting feel. One of the most memorable moments from this part of the shoot was Aaron’s reaction to seeing Mandy in her dress for the first time during their “first look.” His face lit up with pure joy and admiration, a moment that was both heartwarming and picture-perfect.
As I directed Mandy and Aaron to face the sun, the light kissed their skin and added a radiant glow to their already vibrant connection. These initial shots captured the golden hour’s warmth, highlighting their love against the expansive, otherworldly backdrop of the Salt Flats.
A Sky Awash in Color
As the session progressed, the sun dipped below the horizon, transforming the sky into a masterpiece of pinks, purples, and soft blues. The Salt Flats mirrored these colors, creating an almost dreamlike effect. It was during this time that I captured some of my favorite images of Mandy and Aaron, their silhouettes framed by the colorful expanse of sky and salt.
One particularly striking shot featured Mandy and Aaron standing close, their figures reflected faintly on the salt’s glistening surface. The vivid hues of the sky and the tranquil surroundings made the moment feel like something out of a fairy tale.
Details That Shine
Every bride has her special touches, and for Mandy, it was her exquisite gold ring featuring a stunning oval diamond. The intricate design of the ring deserved its moment in the spotlight, so I carefully placed it on a small pile of flaky salt to capture its brilliance. The diamond sparkled beautifully, reflecting the soft pink and purple tones of the sky. These detail shots added a personal and intimate layer to the session, showcasing the couple’s story in the little things.
A Starlit Finale
As darkness began to fall, we wrapped up the session and made our way back to the entrance under a sky just beginning to reveal its stars. The walk back was peaceful, a quiet moment to reflect on the magic we had captured. Although we didn’t have time to reach the nearby pond—a location I had initially hoped to include—the session felt complete. The Bonneville Salt Flats had provided a perfect stage for Mandy and Aaron’s love story, offering a mix of challenges and unexpected beauty.
A Photographer’s Reflection
Mandy and Aaron’s Fall Bonneville Salt Flats Bride and Groom Session is a testament to the beauty of embracing the unexpected. While the shoot didn’t go exactly as planned, the unique challenges pushed us to explore the beauty right in front of us, resulting in images that felt authentic and timeless. From the untouched salt patterns to the breathtaking sunsets, every moment of this session was a reminder of why I love photographing couples at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
To Mandy and Aaron, thank you for trusting me to capture your special day. Your love and connection shone brighter than the Salt Flats themselves, and I’m honored to have been a part of your story.
